Omalos is a charming village located in the Mousouroi unit of the Chania region on the beautiful island of Crete in Greece. Its name, derived from the Greek word Ομαλός meaning even, plain, regular, or smooth, perfectly describes the plateau on which it sits.

The cave is named after Tzanis Markos, a revolutionary chieftain who used it as his lair during the uprisings against the Ottoman Empire.

Omalos also has a rich history, with ties to Greek mythology. It is said that two peaks, Gingilos and Volakias, located at Xyloskalo, were associated with the throne of Zeus, who was born in Crete. The plateau is also home to the peaks of Agathopi and Psilafi, believed to be Zeus’ racing grounds.

During the Ottoman invasion, the Turks rarely managed to penetrate the plateau, earning Omalos a reputation for being a place of refuge. The village is also known for its connection to the Cretan revolutionary Hatzimichalis Giannaris, who was born in nearby Lakkoi and later became a prominent figure in the 1855-1869 conflicts.

In more recent history, Omalos was used as an airfield during World War II.
